This report aims to evaluate three computers: Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS, Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 and Dell Inspiron 1564. The evaluation is carried out by comparing the three computers against the benchmark of their design, their key features, their performance levels, their pros and cons and their prices. Since the computer to be selected is to be used for office work, the five evaluation criterions aim to help select the most appropriate computer for office work.
Design
Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS is by far the best designed ultraportable laptop. Being wrapped in carbon fiber and magnesium material, it is the sturdiest yet the lightest ultraportable weighing at 3 pounds. Although its screen is just 13 inches wide, its 1,600-by-900 resolution enables a larger workspace. It also has the high-tech chiclet keyboard with a comfortable typing experience due to its larger spaces between the keys. Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 has a gigantic trait written all over it. Although its only at 9.1 pounds its 18.4-inch screen also has a 1,920-by1,080 resolution which makes it a perfect workplace for any job. Its widescreen also has a sheet of glass embellishing it past the screen boarders. Finally, Dell Inspiron 1564 has 3 different attractive colors on Ice Blue, Obsidian Black and Promise Pink. Its weight (5.7lbs) makes it fit for stationary use. Its screen size of 15.6 inches and the resolution of 1,366-by-768 makes it ideal for office use as it has a lot of workspace for easy multitasking.
Features
Despite being featherweight, Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS has an internal optical drive which can be easily swapped for a Blu-ray drive. It is also the only ultraportable that is capable of supporting dual SSDs. It also has a slot for the ExpressCard 34 that makes up for its lack of a cellular modem. Apart from the normal connectivity ports, it has a fingerprint scanner for security and also uses the latest 802.11n Wi-Fi cards. Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 is uniquely identified for its volume control found beneath each of the feather-like touch keys. It has a built-in-read-only Blu-ray drive and an ExpressCard slot. Like the other models, it also has 5 ports and a Card reader (5-in-1). Unlike the other models, Dell Inspiron 1564 only has 3 USB ports and a dual layer DVD burner. Although it lacks an ExpressCard slot, the Dell Inspiron 1564 has a multi-media card reader and an 802.11n Wi-Fi. Finally, the Dell Inspiron 1564 has a 320GB hard drive.
Performance
Apart from being the lightest 13-inch laptop, Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS is also the most powerful machine in the same category. It is still the only laptop in its category that has a processor ranking as high as a Core i5-540M processor. Its fast speed is also enhanced by the DDR3 memory and the SSD drives. Using the Cinebench R10 and PCMark Vantage as the speed tests, Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS easily outscores the 8.000 point mark. Apart from being the most powerful ultraportable laptop, Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS is the most luxurious laptop. Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 has a 1.6GHz core i7-720QM CPU coupled with 4GB of DDR3 memory which makes it s super fast computer. Although it has a short battery life of only 66Wh, its high score in Cinebench R10 tests makes the computer an ideal for use no matter the applications. Dell Inspiron 1564 also scores highly in speed and capabilities. Just like Acer Aspire AS8940-6865, it also has a 4GB of DDR3 memory coupled with 2.4GHz core i5-520QM CPU. It also has a battery life of 48Wh.
Pros and Cons
Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS has irreplaceable advantages over the other computers. The fact that it is the most powerful ultraportable computer makes its top most advantage. Its highly switchable graphics and excellent scores in performance and gaming are also great advantages of the Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS. Its incredibly light weight and the optical drive that can be easily swapped for a Blu-ray drive is also a unique advantage that Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS enjoys over its likewise computers. The computer also supports SSD drives and coupled with excellent resolution and a backlit keyboard, the computer enjoys an excellent navigation experience than its mates. The fact that it lacks a cellular modem and its low average battery life are the only two demerits that the computer has. The gorgeous 18.4-inch wide screen of the Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 is also graced with a glass screen that runs from both ends. Its built-in Blu-ray and backlit keyboard are also advantages enjoyed by the computer. Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 enjoys an affordable media center due too its 1080p resolution and the high scoring gaming capabilities. The small size of the battery and the fact that it is an ugly computer from the outside are the only demerits that undermine the computer’s worth. Finally, Dell Inspiron 1564 enjoys its advantages in its excellent typing and navigating experience with an adjusted numeric keyboard. These advantages though are shortchanged by the fact that the computer has no ExpressCard slot and has an unreliable battery life.
Price
Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS is the most expensive computer of the three. Gong for $1,800, owning the computer equates to buying four netbooks and buying another battery on the side. Although it is highly expensive, its cost is worthwhile to be spent by any mobile individual needing power from a computer. The cost of Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 comes immediately after at $1,400, the services and functionalities that one gets form the computer are worth a $5,000 computer. This makes Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 a very affordable computer. Dell Inspiron 1564 is the cheapest of the three computers being at $879. Its design is mainly based on fast speed.
Conclusion
In comparison of the three computer models, (Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS, Acer Aspire AS8940-6865 and Dell Inspiron 1564) based on their design, their key features, their performance levels, their pros and cons and their prices it is apparent that each computer has its own area of strength and weakness. In consideration of the fact that the computers are to be used for office work and are only being purchased for a limited quantity size, quality is integral and needs to satisfy various work levels in the office. It is in this consideration that Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS wins as the most favored computer to be bought for the company to replace the less effective one. Although it is the most expensive, Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS has irreplaceable advantages over the other computers. The fact that it is the most powerful ultraportable computer makes its top most advantage. Its highly switchable graphics and excellent scores in performance and gaming are also great advantages of the Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS. Its incredibly light weight and the optical drive that can be easily swapped for a Blu-ray drive is also a unique advantage that Sony VAIO VPC-Z116GXS enjoys over its likewise computers.
