Diversity Audit at Wal-Mart

The chosen organization for the purpose of this research work is Wal-Mart. Having incorporated in the year 1952, Wal-Mart has established a credible image in the global markets. It is also considered as the largest retailer of the world (Azad, 2009). Since the organization is operating in the global markets, they face a high diversity in reference to its work force. The concept of workforce diversity refers to the differences in the age, education, experience, gender or nationality of the employees because of which the organizational conflicts may take place. The main diversity criteria for diversity audit are –

  • Equal behavior with all the employees
  • Clear rules and regulations for all
  • An ethical code of conduct
  • Regular training and development for the employees
  • Overall satisfaction of the employees

However, during the course of this audit, it was found that Wal-Mart has undertaken sound strategies for managing this aspect of diversity. Firstly, the organization treats all its employees in an equal manner. This implies that all the employees of the organization have the right to speak and contribute in the internal management (Sharma, 2012). Secondly, the organization clearly communicates the authority and responsibility of every employee in the organization. This enables the organization to eliminate the concept of biasness or discrimination against any gender or caste. Thirdly, Wal-Mart ensures that all the employees are provided with adequate training and support in order to enhance the skills and capabilities. This ensures that despite the education or experience, the different employees working at the same hierarchy are perceived as equals. Lastly, the organization undertakes constant informal activities such as parties or ‘get together activities’ to ensure that the employees create a good and friendly relationship with each other. This ensures a positive communication within the different department and eliminates the feeling of diversity in the organization. Hence, Wal-Mart is highly active in managing the workforce diversity
