The discourses and comparison of childhood and adolescent are very integral to the ways people arrange their sense of position and place within the society. They provide the day-to-day activities, which define everything about people. The essay addresses the comparison of childhood life depicted in the two poems; ‘Childhood is the kingdom where nobody dies’ by Edna, St. Vincent Millay and the ‘Remembering Kevan Mackenzie’ by Henry Taylor. These two poems depict the childhood lifestyle within the community. The demarcation and definition of the lifestyle of childhood are filled with both the political and social meanings. This essay will also analyze the method the message has been presented in the two poems. A conclusion will then be drawn from the two poems and how they have presented the childhood lifestyle.

There is a clear distinction between the lifestyle of a child and an adult. In the poem by Edna, the difference is given on the basis for ensuring that additional rights are granted. A child is depicted as someone who receives relief in distress moments while an adult is depicted as someone who restricts the receiving of the rights or any other enjoyment and exercising certain objectives. In the second poem by Henry, the childhood lifestyle is shown as a life of enjoyment, the children enjoy themselves in the summer, riding horses and dancing with other girls of their age group. The narrator enjoys the life of the childhood such that when the time reaches that he is supposed to graduate, he feels very bad that he will miss the lifestyle.

The messages in the two poems have also been presented differently. In the poem by Edna, the narrator does not care about many things apart from people within the family and the cat while the second poem by Henry the narrator really cares about the friends until tears rolled down his eyes by the time he was saying by to them. The two poems differs in the sense that the child in the poem by Edna don’t care about other people or things he has never related with, the only thing he cares about are people within the family and his cat. He does not care even about the relatives who have spent some time with him and given him some gifts like jack-knife or green and pink bag. He only cares about the parents and the cat in the house. This is totally different to the second poem by Henry, where the narrator cares about his friends during the childhood, they spent their time dancing and riding horses during the summer. This shows how different children are subjected to a different lifestyle in childhood. Some just stay indoors with their family without going out to interact with other friends while other spend most of their time with friends outdoors.

The lifestyle a child is subjected to affects the lifestyle he/she will live after growing up. In the first poem, after the narrator has grown up, he still spends his life indoors taking care of the old folks who can not take care of themselves anymore, he describes them as people who have already died, they can not even take their tea, talk or be flattered anymore. The narrator in the second poem by Henry, still go to the beach, which reminds him of the life he had during childhood, he remembers Kevan still dancing with his girls. That is a clear effect of childhood life.

The conclusions drawn from the two poems are that; the childhood lifestyle affects even the adulthood lifestyle so people should be careful with everything they do while still young because the memories will remain with them forever even in their adulthood life.
